Harvesting in Colombia occurs twice a year, which is somewhat unique compared to many other coffee-producing countries. The primary harvest typically runs from October through January, while a secondary harvest, known as the “mitaca,” takes place between April and June. This dual-harvest cycle allows for a more continuous supply of fresh coffee and contributes to the consistency Colombia is known for.
What truly sets Colombia Excelso apart is the hands-on approach taken by small-scale farmers. Most producers carefully hand-pick only the ripest cherries at peak maturity, ensuring better flavor development and quality control. After harvesting, the coffee is processed at micro-wet mills located directly on the farms. Here, the beans are pulped, fermented, and washed before being dried—often on raised beds or elevated tables inside solar dryers. These drying structures help regulate temperature and airflow while protecting the beans from rain, resulting in a cleaner and more stable final product.
Colombia is the second-largest producer of Arabica coffee in the world, and its Excelso grade represents beans that are slightly smaller than Supremo but still deliver excellent quality and consistency. Flavor profiles can vary widely depending on the region and processing method, ranging from smooth, balanced cups with notes of chocolate and caramel—often found in classic breakfast blends—to more vibrant and complex microlots that showcase fruity, floral, or even wine-like characteristics.
